As a reminder, the Cal Lutheran Blackboard system is migrating from on premises to the cloud. To accommodate the move, starting at midnight on December 26 until noon December 29, blackboard will be available within the MyCLU portal in a read only mode. This means students cannot submit assignments and faculty cannot post grades within Blackboard (some of you do) during that time. However, student work prior to the cutoff can be viewed and downloaded as necessary.

Students and faculty will be able to access Blackboard and make changes within Blackboard after noon on December 29.

All scheduled maintenance will be posted on the "Network Status" link on the MyCLU login page.

FBI Warning about Smart TV's this Christmas

A smart TV makes a great gift this Christmas, but maybe your Smart TV is too smart for your own good. The FBI is warning consumers that aside from the risk of having app developers gather information on you and your viewing habits, a smart TV might also be able to access your network using a back door through your router. The FBI warns that hackers might take control of the camera and microphone in a worst case scenario. Smart TV's have a history of collecting data on their owners. It's only been a few years since TV maker Visio paid a $2.2 million dollar fine after it was caught collecting and viewing customer data. You can read the complete FBI report here.

What if your SMS text messages get hacked?

We're cautious about clicking unfamiliar links. We double check the sender's address in email. We don't use web pages that don't start: "HTTPS" to signify they have a security certificate. But how much attention do we pay to our text messages? Recently a massive database of SMS messages was hacked from a company called "TrueDialog" which is an SMS provider for business and higher education. Literally millions of text messages were recently found on one of their servers completely unprotected. And this isn't an isolated case. We don't want hackers to get into our email, but I'm pretty sure I don't want them reading my texts either.
